Once again, I am delighted to offer Cody Foster's beautiful, Retro-style Holiday Houses, including this lovely ~Holiday Finery House~ -- one of several brand new, LARGE, Cardboard Houses he created for Christmas 2017! This beautiful piece is yet another fabulous creation from the amazing folk art studio of ~Cody Foster & Co.~ (formerly known as ~Backporch Friends~). It is one of a fantastical series of fanciful Folk Art Houses, Churches, and Castles from the fertile imagination and talented hands of renown American Folk Artist, Cody Foster and part of his ~Holiday Adornments~ Collection. The ~Holiday Finery House~ is a genuine, authorized reproduction of Cody Foster's original art work. A true Retro work of art, this piece is crafted from paper board & pâpier maché (paper mache); hand painted and decorated in a mix of classic Retro and metallic colors; lovingly aged and distressed; and finished with a number of fantastic "vintage" details. This large House would be a wonderful addition to any Folk Art collection and an absolutely enchanting holiday decoration! This terrific piece is fashioned in the style of the vintage cardboard Christmas or "Putz" houses manufactured in Germany, Japan, and the United States throughout the mid-1900's. These pieces were readily available & affordable decorations found in every dimestore from 1928 through the 1960's. Often sold in sets, they were used to constructed elaborate Christmas villages which were "landscaped" with their popular Retro counterpart ~ the "Bottle Brush" Tree. This is a large and substantial piece! The House stands an impressive 11¾-inches tall, and its rectangular base is 12¼-inches by 9¾-inches. The amount of detail on this lovely piece is amazing. The main walls are cherry red, and walls of the front wing are painted a deep salmon pink. The walls are heavily flocked with artificial snow flakes. The House has two high, peaked roofs painted deep grey and encrusted with more snowflakes and dusted with shimmering glitter. The roofs are draped in cotton batting which has been glazed and dusted with mica and glitter to mimic drifts of new fallen snow. (Cardboard House decorated with cotton batting were known as "Cotton Toppers.") A cornflower blue square chimney rises from the peak of the main roof. It is capped with fluted, gold trim. More cotton batting tops the chimney and drifts around its sides. Extending from the front of the house is a porch with an overhanging roof. The porch is cornflower blue with a turquoise railing. The porch’s corner posts are topped with silver beads ~ like old Mercury glass ornaments. The roof is corrugated and painted sky blue with a dark brown and gold edge. It, too, is topped with drifting cotton snow and mica flakes. There is a small extension on the left side of the main house. It is red with a grey, slanted, snow-covered roof. The corrugated base trim of the House is painted deep walnut brown. The House has 6 multi-paned windows ~ four are elongated arches, one is a rectangle, and one is a round bull’s-eye. Turquoise shutters flank the second story window. All the windows have traditional gold paper "leading" and are lined with heavy, frosted cellophane. The original Cardboard Houses were hollow and designed to be lit from inside with a Christmas bulb which made the windows glow, like stained glass. Like the originals, this piece has the round opening in the back that was used for lighting. The building sits on a ½-inch thick, paper board base painted winter white and topped with "snow" dusted with fine glitter. The front corners of the base are decorated with sections of sawtooth fencing. The end posts are topped with gold “Mercury glass” beads. The fence is winter white and dusted with more snow and glitter. The House is landscaped with four magical Bottle Brush Trees. The tallest Tree is 8-inches tall. It is dark green and trimmed metallic and in pearlescent ball ornaments in shades of blue, pink, gold and white.. A smaller, dark green Bottle Brush Tree stands in front of it. On the right side of the house is 5½-inch, dark green Bottle Brush Tree that has been fancifully sculpted like topiary. A smaller, light grey Tree stands in front of it. Each of these Trees is decorated with as much intricate detail and authenticity as Cody's larger Trees. The Trees are flocked with white gesso "snow" and dusted with sparkling mica flakes. The entire House is heavily flocked with artificial snow. And, as its name describes, this enchanting House is trimmed with holiday finery. A dark green Bottle Brush wreath hangs on the front of the House, below the peak of the roof. It frames the bull’s-eye window. The wreath is decorated with multi-colored metallic beads and trimmed with a red velvet ribbon tied in a bow. Dark green Bottle Brush garland is draped on the front railing of the porch. Last, but not least, a Retro-style spun cotton batting Snowman sits in the front yard to greet visitors. He’s designed and fabricated just like a Mid-Century Japanese piece ~ complete with black top hat, a green scarf, and red berry pip nose. Delightful! Every time I look at this piece I see more tiny details! There is a very festive air about this piece. Its design, colors, and sparkle evoke thoughts of a Christmas. This House is a truly enchanting work of Folk Art! As the original Cardboard Houses become more expensive and difficult to find, Cody's work makes these gorgeous pieces available to a whole new generation. What a wonderful way to start a new family holiday tradition! This imported House is brand new and unused. It is in MINT condition and ready for your holiday decorating! It looks fabulous as a centerpiece, under the Christmas tree, or perched on a mantel or shelf. With its very European feel and appearance, it fits beautifully into a "Shabby," "Cottage Chic," "Paris Flea," "Retro," or "Garden Style" decor. It looks wonderful displayed year-round with your cherished vintage collectibles, or its sure to make a reappearance for many holidays to come! It blends beautifully with other primitive folk art and real vintage collectibles. Be sure to see my other auctions for more of Cody Foster's amazing holiday Houses and his famous Bottle Brush Trees! "As a little boy, Foster had spent much of his spare time with his grandmothers, both of whom created crafts as gifts for family and friends. Only occasionally did they sell to shops or at craft shows, but when they did, Foster was usually in tow. They kept their grandson out of mischief by teaching him to thread a needle and sew rag dolls. 'I remember sitting at this one really boring craft show and [beginning to doodle],' he says. "When I got home, I made Sunshine Suzy-Q, my first doll. Foster began selling his creations by the time he was a sophomore in high school, doing craft shows in small communities in northern Nebraska and in larger areas such as Omaha and Rapid City, S.D. He admits to playing hooky from school to get ready for the shows. As a high school senior, he was approached by a wholesale rep who wanted to represent him; the rep quickly got him into his first wholesale show in metropolitan Kansas City just two weeks after his high school graduation. Cody's designs have become nationally recognized. His work has been featured in Country Living magazine, the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, and in high-end boutiques, museum shops, and department stores across the country. His work is prized by designers and collectors alike, for their unique and whimsical charm." ~ © 2002 College of Business Administration, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
